Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better than her stage name Queen Latifah. Her career as a musician, film and TV artist has garnered an impressive the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced around the age of ten. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, the state of New Jersey. She was also raised through the Baptist Church. Latifah is a word that means gentle and generous. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was 8. Latifah is a tall girl of 5'10 inches who played part of the high school basketball team. In her high school's play Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a beatboxer in the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah joined the original Flavor Unit group, made up of several MCs as well as producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the tune. It was signed by Latifah and dropped her first track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
